Riika J. Virtanen

Riika J. Virtanen earned her Ph.D. in South Asian Studies in 2011 at the University of Helsinki. Her dissertation entitled Tibetan Written Images: A Study of Imagery in the Writings of Dhondup Gyal (Studia Orientalia 115. Helsinki, 2014) has been published by the Finnish Oriental Society. She worked as an assistant editor of The Tibet Journal at the Library of Tibetan Works & Archives in India from 1996 to 2001, during which time she also compiled and translated an anthology of modern Tibetan literature, entitled A Blighted Flower and Other Stories: Portraits of Women in Modern Tibetan Literature (Dharamsala: LTWA, 2000). She is currently one of the editors of the journal Himalayan Discoveries and has written many articles about modern Tibetan literature. At present she is also conducting research on characters in contemporary Tibetan literature at the University of Helsinki.
