Yangtso Kyi

Yangtso Kyi was born in 1963 in the nomadic area of Qinghai Province. Though her primary-school education was several times interrupted by the need to tend her family’s herds, she persisted in her studies and graduated from Northwest Nationalities Institute in 1988. Her story in this issue–her first and most important published piece–elicited many sympathetic and congratulatory letters when it appeared and has since been reprinted in major anthologies of modern Tibetan fiction. Formerly a community educator for a local women’s association and an official translator, she now works as a legal researcher in the town of Chab-cha in Qinghai Province.
